Making FaNet Cable

Post by cagdas »

I try to reach Service Menu of my BD-ES6000 (lastest FW 1013) but I'm not sure about my cable.

I don't have FTDI TTL-232R cables but I have 2 X USB to RS232 and and RS232 Serial Cable.
Here is the items:
2 X http://www.benimdepom.net/Images/UrunResimleri/2734.jpg
http://www.dreamboxok.com/images/produc ... le-big.jpg

I consider to use my Notebook's USB port and here is the my idea:
(Notebook USB -> USB TO RS232 -> RS232 Cable -> USB TO RS232 -> BD-ES6000)

Is it possible to reach the BD with these combination or I have to buy TTL-232Rs?

1- You have to cross RX and TX signals between your 2 usb adapters.
2- I did my first test with a 'noname' adapter and it worked, but it depends on the compatibility with ftdi.ko... so I cannot guaranty it will work with yours.

I did what you said with a cable but it doesn't work. With two computer, I can connect via Putty but with my BD, there is no proof about it works. I tried command promt and also FaNet app for send INFO and FACTORY signals but it doesn't work.

(PC <-> USB TO RS232 Adapter <-> cross TX-RX with a cable <-> USB TO RS232 Adapter <-> BD-ES6000 USB Port)

Now, I consider to do something like this but I'm not sure about it:
(PC <-> USB TO RS232 Adapter <-> cross TX-RX with a cable <-> BD-ES6000 USB Port)
Without the second adapter, I consider to use a USB MALE head connect 3 cables to it. Something like this: http://www.trimaxmeters.com/images/RS232-USB.jpg

What do you think?

No, you need a USB(pc) to USB(bd) connection.
The first one you made seems good : If you can connect 2 pc with putty, then your cable is ok.

There is no command prompt on this link; it only supports FaNet protocol.
Please confirm that with FaNet.exe :
- You have no error when you click on Connect;
- The Info banner is not displayed when you clik on key_info;
- the program does not hang when you click on key_info.

If it still does not work, it probably means that ftdi.ko does not work with your cable.
To be sure, you need the debug console http://wiki.samygo.tv/index.php5/Serial_console (however, no detailed wiki for bd-es6000 yet; If you need, I can try to help you to find the signals).

-Yes, there is no error when I click Connect.
-There is no popup or banner when I click on key_info
-The program doesn't hang when I click any button.

Also, in cmd (I mentioned as command promt in my previous message), I also tried:
mode com4:9600,n,8,1,p
copy /b info.bin com4
copy /b info.bin com4;

and it returns 1 file copied successfuly message for each line. But, there is no change on my BD.

For reaching debug console, I think I have to disassemble the player but I tried it yesterday and there are only two screws on the back panel and I didn't open the case with my hands after unplug these screws. I think I should use a guide or something for open case. If I open it, I will able to try debug consele. Do you have any idea about this issue?

take two usb2ttl cables and all should be normal. Now you`re using rs232toUSB and this is why you don`t get goal.

Actually, I will leave from home for three month and I have these stuff and I've considered it can be possible. This was the reason why I'm using RS232s. But if it isn't possible with these adapters I will order usb2ttl cables and deal with BD later.

Anyway, thank you for your help.

In fact, the level of the signals in the middle is not important : both ttl or rs232 are ok.
It is only important to use 2 identical cable so that the signals match.
As you cable is working between 2 pc ([EDIT]ie what you type in putty on 1st pc is displayed in putty on 2nd pc and vice versa), it is electrically good.
The only question is the compatibility with ftdi.ko
Only debug console can help.

I thought same thing.

Yes, this is totally true. When I type something from PC1, immediately I see the output on the screen of PC2, vice versa also works.
The only question is the compatibility with ftdi.ko

As I said before, I have a problem with the case of the BD-ES6000, it has a very different and small case than others and I couldn't achive to open it.

On my BD-E8300, I have to remove 3 screws on the rear, then slide the top cover and sides (that are attached together) to the back; as it is inserted into the front panel, I just to force a little a little bit. There are no clips between the front panel and the removable top+sides part.
