multilangual subtitles respectively more than one srt-file!?

Post by stm999999999 »

Hi,

I am very new to a samsung high tech tv (a LE32C650) and I am still trying the possibilities of my new toy :D ;)

Up to now I used a dvd-divx-player with english movies and an english and a german srt-file: movie.avi - movie.en.srt - movie.de.srt

So with my dvd player I could switch to the several srt-files like subtitles on a DVD.

Now I have these files on my usb stick and try this on my new Samsung. The subtitles are not shown. :?

OK, tried it with movie.avi and movie.srt: it worked. But with this solution I can only use one language file at once (without disconnect and rename manually). Most times english subs are more than enough for me but sometimes there a phrases I have to switch to german for a short time.

Is there any solution to use several movie.LANG1.srt, movie.LANG2.srt, movie.LANG3.srt instead of only one movie.srt? An hack to the media player?

Or perhaps a more tricky solution: Can I trigger a script by remote controll button and use a script to rename movie.LANG1.srt to movie.srt (and second time movie.LANG2.srt to movie.srt and so on)?

Ciao and TIIA, stm

edit: I asked this on the official samsung forum (in a general manner, no ask for an hack  ) perhaps someone wants to click to "I have this question too")

Normally you would have to rename the Srt file that you want to use to have the same filename as the movie file (but with extension .srt)
Otherwise how would the Tv know which SRT file belongs to which movie, e.g. consider the following files in the same directory:

rambo.avi
rambo.srt
inception.avi
inception-en.srt

Consider the above if these movies are in the same directory. If you allowed switching between the .srt files you would get the rambo subtitles for the inception movie.

So your solution is to copy or rename the subtitle file that you want to use to have the same filename base as the movie file you want to associate it with.

Some other file formats (notably .mkv) allow for multiple language subtitles (and multiple audio tracks!)in the same file.
For example i have the movie Brazil with spanish audio as the first selection and english audio as the second.

my divx-dvd-player can handle this without a problem. Or on my pc: bsplayer or DirectVobSub.

Their solution (and as I understand the subtitle-scene: this is a common standard!)

a srt-file-name must have this format:

movie.avi
movie.srt

OR

movie.XXXXX.srt e.g. movie.en.srt and movie.de.srt and so on.

So in your example:

rambo.avi
rambo.srt

will work

inception.avi
inception-en.srt

will not work, because the basename of the srt-file is inception-en

no problem will be with this:

rambo.avi
rambo.srt
rambo.en.srt
rambo.de.srt
inception.avi
inception.en.srt
inception.de.srt
inception.br.srt ...

So the algorithm has to look:

playing: rambo.avi (or .mvk, .mp4, ...)

1) what is the basename, the root of the actual played video file?

get "rambo"

2) is there any file in the same folder with <basename>.WHATEVER.srt or <basenname>.srt? get this: rambo.srt, rambo.en.srt, rambo.de.srt

3) rotate through this files for subtitle

So never ever you will get the inception subtitle to rambo movie. So my dvd or my pc players handle this and it works.

The problem for renaming the sub-file is: I need to change the language on the fly while watching a movie. ost times english subs are more than enough for me but sometimes there a phrases I have to switch to german for a short time.

If your HDD is ext3:
MediaPlayer can recognize and play symlinks. So you can use different directories for subtitle files and in every directory you can place symlink to main video file.
for example:

Code: Select all

movie.avi
movie.srt <- subtitles en
/fr_subtitles
movie.srt <- subtitles fr
@movie.avi (symlink to ../movie.avi)
/sp_subtitles
movie.srt <- subtitles sp
@movie.avi (symlink to ../movie.avi)
Method is a bit dirty, but it works. You avoid duplicating your movie... But to change subtitles you have to play movies from different folders and it makes headache if you want have it changed on the fly...
