Having a difficult time understanding the hack though.

link0 on sda1 contains your needed start.sh code.
edit link0_Temp symlink to be linked to /mtd_rwarea/start.sh
chmod required files to 755 on another unix machine.
dont touch Clone.dat, only two files above required to edit.
For tests i used HotelMode hack usb image. Just removed all unused data from fat partition, reanamed one of firmwares dir to mine with Clone inside (T-GASAKUC/Clone).
Today i finished. Any support tomorrow at evening only. Don't brick
I would recommend to import first custom (not start.sh) file to /mtd_rwarea with code we want to execute (like wait for usb and execute script from there), and just after TV reboots with the second try - import modified start.sh.
Strange, but it was impossible to import two files at once. After every usb to TV import TV reboots.

Last I checked, my TV doesn't support XFS.

How did you check this?
If so, you should check all unix filesystems with symlinking support...

XFS, HFS, ext3, ext4, etc.
I haven't found a single one that can be recognized from USB.

Seems we just found a way to root D5500 and older models, but not smarthubless TVs.
Try to enable PVR in service menu (I know it wont work), might it adds xfs support

No luck.
Enabling PVR doesn't enable XFS.

Back to the start line. I hoped we made some progress.
Anyway, do we have D5500 and older models for tests? Volunteers? Any?
