First, make sure that Cable-GND is correctly connected to Mainboard-GND.
If you have clear text when it is inverted with RX, that could mean that your FTDI TTL-232R-3V3-AJ is configured with inverted RX and TX.
Check and correct this with the FTDI Eeprom's utility : See FTDI FT_PROG
