First, make sure that Cable-GND is correctly connected to Mainboard-GND.
If you have clear text when it is inverted with RX, that could mean that your FTDI TTL-232R-3V3-AJ is configured with inverted RX and TX.

Nice! I missed that utility. It was not there when I got my cable. Here's the manual:
