Ex-link cable connection for LA40C630 with VAL6XDAAC

Hi all,
As a safety measure, before rooting my LA40C630 TV, I tried to get the ex-link cable to work, but so far no luck.
I got a USB to TTL cp2102 card. I connected the TX, RX and GND pins just as explained in the Wiki, and I set the debug mode in the control menu. I also set the terminal software to 115200 8N1 as specified.
Some additional information:
(1) I'm pretty sure the USB2TTL card works fine, since I did a loopback test (connecting the TX and RX pins) and what I typed appeared on the terminal.
(2) I tried connecting to other pins in the VGA socket of the TV, I also tried connecting only GND and TV TX pin (to RX pin on the card of course), and still didnt see any output.
(3) I tried switching the TX and RX pins, just in case, and still no output.
The firmware on my TV is VAL6XDAAC -1013.0, I bought my TV in Israel and it seems that this firmware version is available in the middle east.
I read somewhere that new firmware have the debug output disabled, can anyone confirm if he was able to get debug output for VAL6XDAA -1013.0 or perhaps for newer/older versions of VAL6XDAAC ?
I'm also not sure if a TV with this firmware was rooted before, I will be glad if I can root it and update about it here of course, but I'm not sure how to proceed from here: do you think I should try to root it (via hotel mode) even without the working ex-link cable? or - perhaps I can try to downgrade my firmware? I read here that downgrading firmware before you have root is impossible, but perhaps, since my firmware is a custom one (it is made by Samsung, but it supports Hebrew) there's a chance I can install an earlier English version of the firmware?
Any suggestion and/or information are highly welcomed.
Thanks!!
