Root password on TV

Hi all,

Does anyone have an idea how I can set a root password on the TV? Now it's plain telnet access with root as user, no passwd.
A bit very open to the world at large if you ask me.
It's probably easy to set up password access in our own rc.local scripts, for starters, but I would love to see it in /etc/passwd /etc/shadow and others, at bootup, without e.g., moving stuff from /mtd_rwarea to /etc at boot time.

Ideas anyone?

Yes, the question maybe should be "How do I install a new root image (without bricking my TV)". But that's another topic.
Got dropbear running now (linked statically, 3.3MB), I'm familiar with password authentication, will look into key authentication. Thanks for the hint.
