You don't need a mac for hacking, i've done it in Win7.

1 and 2 are available as "Game" patches, without the need to patch firmware.

Version 2 of avrfix can be downloaded here:

You probably want the non-cip version.
There is more than one flavour of subtitles fix. You can find them in this thread:

including one multi-application "pack" that includes the avrfix.
