Should it play without HDD?

Hi all, I bought BD-8500/EN second hand. When i switch it ON then anly see Hello on front panel. I can open cd tray putpc and it will start roate. On HDMI screen is nothing. I can also switch it OFF by remote or from front panel. But that is all. I hear HDD is started. I checked to run it withoud HD...
