Hi
I'm having troubles using a Optical (TOSLINK) to RCA converter for sound output to my home theater system. All is well for HDMI sources, but when using DTV (enabled by a CI module), sound isn't working, I only get distorted "sparkling". All channels say "HE-AAC". I've seen similar threads on different models where this is seemingly solved by enabling PCM. I do not have any settings for this, as far as I can tell.
Model: UE40B6050VW (40A1UF0E / UB6000)
Firmware: T-CHL5DEUC-2010.1
Any way to solve this? Through the service menu?
Optical (TOSLINK) to RCA for DTV
Re: Optical (TOSLINK) to RCA for DTV
The B series TV's don't have option to 'downscale' the 5.1 (or other multichannel) audio to stereo PCM for optical output. I have the same issue and browsed through the service menu but did not find anything suitable. I have one F series TV and it has that option in normal menu.
The only option is to have some external converters which can handle the multichannel formats, basic toslink -> stereo converter won't help (as I have also such devices and get the same distorted sparkling noise), however they work just fine when the source DTV channel has plain stereo audio.
I have ordered one that should be able to handle that 5.1 input via toslink and output 2.0 analog rca. Still waiting for it though, so don't have actual experience.
Still, for me, that is not the optimal solution, since my audio equipment works digitally, although just stereo, so I have to do another AD conversion to get it back to toslink. There is no cheap devices in the market that would do 5.1->2.0 (or 2.1) digitally. Some workarounds I have in mind though; for example toslink -> hdmi, then connect that to hdmi audio extractor that can simulate EDID so that it 'supports' only stereo and has toslink output. That should in theory work and keep everything in the digital realm.
Anyhow, there might be lipsync issues in all scenarios, so maybe I'll just get a separate DTV receiver that has optical output and can do the PCM conversion (and has CEC for added bonus).
