You have to get readable words in boot log. Until you get those...unreadable symbols - it means it is not correct and must check cable or speed settings.
It is good already, that you get anything

Are you sure that the SecureCRT is not trying ssh or some other encrypted connection method? Maybe if you try with program that handles only plain text unsecure connections?
