For changing the region code you can try the hack described here:

This hack works for a lot of Samsung-Players ( unfortunately not for my BD-C500-XAA, A/1)

Another way could be to set the Buyers-Region described in the Service-Manual of the HT-C5200:

The second image shows the pinheader for the serial console. You could attach a serial TTL-Coupler to it to see the output. Would be interesting...

I would suppose the Software of these devices have more in common with the Samsung TV-Sets than with the Samsung Blueray-Series.

Why not? The firmware of the BD-C8200 looks more like the actual Firmware from Samsung-TV-Sets than the Firmware of the Bluray-only-devices (Which are mainly
Broadcom based).

Regarding access to service menu, you will probably gain the information if you add serial console.
