WiFi performance worse with smb mount

Hello everybody,

I encountered a strange behavior regarding the data rate over WLAN?

There is 9GB mkv file on my PC that is connected my router via 100 MBit cable to. The TV is connected to the router?s 54 MBit G WLAN by using Samsung?s WLAN adapter. I get about 2.5 MByte/s with this WLAN.
When playing the movie via DLNA by using the Samsung PC Share Manager 2.3 the data rate of my PC?s network adapter goes up to a little more than 2MB/s. Thus, the TV plays the video without any problems

Now the problem:
When I?m using the smb mount to play the movie on the TV, the data rate won?t exceed 1.5MB/s. This is not sufficient for this particular mkv file. As a result of it, the movie gets stucked.

When using a cable connection instead, I cannot see a difference between the data rate of playing the movie via DLNA or smb mount.

Does anybody know why the WiFi performance gets worse with a smb mount in comparison to Samsung Media Share Manager?

Best regards
Matthias

Hi,

thank's that you got back to me.

@wannaseek
You could use the Windows Performance Monitor, with whose help you can determine the present data rates of ur hd or network adapter. In my case the conditions are pretty good since the distance between the TV and the router is just 4m. With a greater distance or a wall in between the WLAN performance is reduced drastically.

Anyway, it makes sense that there is a overhead. But isn't there the very same overhead when I'm transferring a file between my wired desktop PC and my WLAN notebook. since those windows shares are smbs? This would imply that I would have to be able to get those 2.5MB/s also between my PC an TV.

Best regards
Matthias

Nope, that figure displays the payload if you select the read data rate of your HD for instance. In any case the wifi adapter's data rate is insignificantly higher. So both are pretty much about 2,5MB/s.
I don't comprehend why the overhead should be bigger when transferring dater from the PC to the TV than from the PC to another WLAN PC.

Well, with smb, it's only 1.5MB/s which is my problem. The video stutters only during high bitrate scenes where the needed bandwith is above those 1.5 MB/s.
The funny thing is that the cifs process goes up to 40% during those scenes. When I'm using the 100 MBit cable connection the cpu usage of cifs stays around 10%. Well, I'm gonna buy a N router Fritz!Box 7390 anyway. I hope that the situation will improbe then.
