D6000 Ex-link Cable

Hi everyone,
I've got a D6000 tv with a media centre connected to it, and after a bit of reading I discovered it is possible to send commands to the tv (power on/off/set input etc) via serial with an exlink cable. I'd like to be able to do this so the tv automatically turns on and goes to the right input when the media centre is turned on.
There's no 3.5mm Ex-Link jack on the tv, so a bit more research showed that serial comms could be achieved through the VGA port. I followed this guide http://wiki.samygo.tv/index.php5/Ex-Lin ... circuit_V1 to build my cable, using this cable (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/290697403727 ... 132wt_1344) instead of the MAX232 circuit. So far, connecting it to my tv and setting the RS232 mode to debug shows no output (and no flashing of the Tx/Rx LEDs in the cable).
I noted in the guide that it says to connect ground to pins 5,6,7,8 and the case, however I've only connected to pin 7 as this is the pin ground is connected to in all the images and I only have the one ground wire. Is it imperative that ground be connected to all 4 pins and the case? Is there something else obvious to anyone as to why it wouldn't be working?
Thanks.
