Volume control on BD-D8500

Hello everyone,
Previously, I had my BD-D8500 hooked up to a TV. The TV responded to IR volume up/down commands, so I was able to control the volume. The other day my TV broke, and now I've hooked up my BD-D8500 to a computer screen. Everything's fine, except I don't have IR volume control anymore.
If I were to hack the BD-D8500, would I be able to change/build something so the BD-D8500 itself would respond to volume up/down? I would like the BD-D8500 to alter the volume of the HDMI output.
I'm a software developer and Linux literate; I suspect that won't be the problem. But on the hardware side, would this be possible?
With kind regards,
Jurrie
