LCD AMP stutter on TV content Why? source cableTV/satellite

Post by MKANET »

Most people who own a Samsung LCD TV know that when you enable AutoMotion Plus and have a PC, cableTV, or Satellite box hooked up using 1080p@60hz HDMI, video will stutter. The only way around it is to change the source refresh rate to 24Hz or 23.976Hz (aka 24P) or using the "Clear" AMP preset will reduce the stutter.

This issue goes back several generations of Samsung LCD TVs with countless forum posts all over the Internet about this problem. I'm convinced this is the single biggest problem with Samsung LCD TVs.

What's actually causing this problem? Does Samsung's anti-judder technology have a bug? Does the onboard processor not have enough power to handle anything higher than 24frames per second?

I'm hoping there's a way to fix this problem. I'm guessing European users may not have this issue with PAL content since it has a slower frame rate.

I am currently working a method to lower the frame scene threshold setting for AMP to activate, preferably to the lowest possible setting.
this is what causes the "stutter", the AMP is switching on & off.

Thank you very much. There are literally hundreds of people who have complained about this problem all over the Internet. It will be great to get this fix via a firmware update.

We have all been talking about this on AVS Forum. I will let them know that finally there is an engineer who will fix this problem (hopefully soon).

If you would like for me to test for you, please let me know. I would be happy to confirm if the firmware resolves the issue or not.

Thanks so much!!

a current temporary fix for the USA model UN46D8000YFXZA is to change a setting in the service menu, under "Option", change "Model" from "UD8000" to "UD9500", i have been able to test this temporary fix only on this model (i own it).
this will lower the frame scene change threshold required to activate AMP (less "stutter" when automatically changing from on to off during frame scene threshold changes).
additionally, this model is well deserving of heat sinks applied to Genoa-P IC on the Main PCB and Napoli IC on the T-CON PCB.
these two ic's run extremely hot and may be cause for possible failure over extended time.
what is your complete model number ?

I have the USA model UN55D8000YFXZA.

So, here is the perfect chance to reproduce your test. Could you please outline the steps necessary to change that setting? I have never gone into service mode. I will be extremely careful not to change anything else.

If this works, this may very well be the most popular tweak on these TVs.

PS: Ambient temp in my temperature controlled room never exceeds 72c. I know that heat can potentially destroy some electronics over time.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.
Thanks million.

While the TV is off, I press

Info, Menu, Mute, Power. I have already tried this 4 times.

However, that just turns the TV on. It doesnt enter any special mode. What am I doing wrong?

*changing this setting will remove any previous tweaked service settings and revert them to the service settings for model UD9500, you -may- lose purchased apps*
with tv powered off, press MUTE 182 power on the remote (you cant enter advanced service settings with regular samsung remote)
"OPTION" should be highlighted.
svc-menu.jpg
press enter button (enter surrounded by the arrows).
use arrow down and highlight "MODEL".
svc-model.jpg
write down on paper the current MODEL (should be UD8000 in case you want to change it back).
press enter button (enter surrounded by the arrows).
change "MODEL" by using arrow right/left to value "UD9500", dont press arrow up/down when changing this value, it will move to the next setting instead.
press "RETURN" button on remote twice once its set to UD9500.
power the set off then power on and test.
internal service white balance settings are not changed and remain the same for UD8000/UD9500.

I can get under the option menu. However, on mine, the Model is greyed out. It is greyed out UD8000.

Did you try this with the standard firmware? I wonder what's different?

Edit: BTW, I lost all my user-defined white balance/color balance settings even though I didn't make any changes. I just saw that the setting I wanted was greyed out and turned of the TV. :(

entering the service menu puts the state of the tv in factory default.
its a PITA every time i enter using the factory remote, that i have to set my custom regular menu settings back back.
i have the latest firmware installed, version 1026, i can always revert to any firmware from development to first release and versions following since i have access to them directly.
i believe you may have to adjust the "MODEL" value with the factory remote or the software tool that is being used on this site forgot what its called).
i would try entering service using the regular remote and not my factory remote to confirm this, but id rather not have to spend another 30 minutes adjusting the regular menu settings and setting up the apps (resets every time you enter service mode).
im quite sure the same settings can be accessed using the factory remote like the software tool thats being used on this site.
here is a link for the factory remote (press info+factory to enter service, press factory twice to exit service, no need to power on/off tv every time except for MODEL changes)
https://www.findremotes.com/remote-cont ... 240479.htm
the part number is AA81-00243A if you want to google it.
however, on a side note, i changed the "infolink" from "operating" which is the default, to "developing", not "development" and i got a serious load of test apps, beta apps, proprietary apps, cable tv apps (time warner, verizon, etc) and "strange" apps like a "fireplace" app.
interesting to say the least.

Oh okay, I was under the impression you were using the remote control that came with the TV.

It seems a bit crazy to buy a $60 remote control just to change one setting. I don't have that kind of money to spend. I wish I could buy a used one for $15-$20. I would try doing it the software method; however, I doesn't sound like you're familiar with it enough to comfortably/safely walk me through.

Are there any new features/settings that are exposed when changing the model to UD9500?
