Well, I went out and bought a long cable that would reach my modem. I've followed all the instructions, the "software update" option becomes active after a few seconds, as it should, but when I select it I get a "Failed to connect- error code 600 - resource error" message.
When I connect the modem through "Auto" it connects to the internet just fine, but when I change the DNS manually to 46.4.199.222 it can't connect and I get the above message. I know it's entered correctly because I cleared it and tried again several times.
Could it just be a temporary problem with the server? I'll try again later, but it's a PITA because the modem is 2 rooms away from the player and the TV.
The "upgrade from usb / disk" options were not greyed out, by the way, and you can download updates to a usb drive from the Samsung website. Does that mean you can upgrade from usb but not downgrade? Because that would be the least problematic, if possible.
Anyway, thanks for any suggestions.

SUCCESS!
It took an hour or so, with a lot of errors, but eventually I was able to downgrade and it's working fine now with 1015.5.
Here's what happened: (I turned the power off and unplugged from the wall between tries, just to be safe). First, I could connect to the internet on "Auto" but would fail to connect on manual, making sure the dns was correct. I kept trying, and eventually it connected and started to download the software. WOW!!! But then it started a loop... when it reached 88% it started all over again from 0. I let it keep trying for a while, then cancelled out and tried again. Same thing, Next try, it stopped at 88% and instead of looping, I got an error 800 message, telling me to turn the unit off and try agin. Same thing happened. Then, it started downloading again, stopped at 88% and I was all set for the error message when, after a minute, it went to 89%, then gradually kept going until it finished. I chose to install it, the unit shut down automatically after 3 seconds, and when I turned it on again it was fine.
There's a lesson in here somewhere, but I don't care to think about it now.
Thank you, SamyGO and arris69!

Tried to downgrade a BD-D5500 with firmware 1020.
Region 2, but no luck. It says there are no updates.
Can someone point me in the right direction...
Model: BD-D5500-ZF
Software: BSP-D5500ZF-1020.5

@eaw: A BD-D5700, downgraded from 1028.
For a while there I really thought it wasn't going to happen, but it was worth it. Just keep trying, even if it takes a couple of days.
I'm even thinking about buying another one, a reconditioned unit. I've seen them online for US$60-70. I'll downgrade it if necessary, then put it away until this one eventually dies. At least then I won't have to worry about it for a few years.

Re: Firmware Downgrade D-Series (SamyGO Proof of Concept, BD
I have a BD-D6900S-ZG which I absolutely adore, until I upgraded it with Software BPH-D6900EUB-1010.1
.
This forum provides the very first glimmer of hope of restoring what I always thought to be my BluRay player - nope it belongs to Hollywood & Co.
One reason I would pass up on Sony is that over the years they pulled mean tricks to their own customers, installing root software on a PC and such and causing my CD only to play on certain devices (but certainly not on my PC). It makes sense as they own a lot of movies and music and think that protecting that with all means against their customers makes sense.
I do have some old software versions, but could I upload these to the server somehow or aid in another way?
arris69 & co: keep up the good work
, keep our Samy's in topshape!
