3TB usb hard disk

Post by Cogninaut »

I have recently tried to connect my new 3TB (seagate) external hard disk to my 55F6500 tv
The results were:
MBR: 1 ntfs 3TB partition ( YES this is correct, the disk was preformated this way): TV would report it as 2TB , could play movies normally but did not test when the disk would get full
GPT: 1 ntfs 3TB partition : TV would report it as 2TB , could play movies normaly but did not test when the disk would get full
GPT: 1 ntfs 2.5TB partition + 1 ntfs 500GB Partition: TV would report it as 1st partition as 2TB, Could play movies on both partitions , as before I did not test when the first partition would be full

The obvious question is: what will happen on a larger than 2 TB partition at the files located near the end? Does anyone have any hard facts on the subject?

So far the only safe way seems to format 2x1.5 TB partition on GPT and be done with it. However this would lead to some unnecessary shuffling around the inputs to locate a movie, and I would rather avoid it if at all possible.

Thanks in advance

To answer my own question:

I have since tried filling the disk with data (while formatted as a single ntfs gpt partition) and the movies at the end of the disk play fine. I have actually checked the position of the movies with a defragment tool to be absolutely sure they were written beyond the 2TB limit.
