DLNA not shows extensions of files

Post by kalika3 »

Helow! I?m writing from Spain. Surprised by this great blog. Very interesting infos and comments.
Excuse my cathatonic english. :P

My Samsung LED TV is a UE32C5100QW model and I?m very happy with it.

I recently installed a router TPLink TL-WR1043ND with wifi and a USB hard drive to share it via wifi.
After configuration I?m able to :
- Upload/download files from/to hard drive via FTP to/from Desktop PC, Portable Pc, Samsung Galaxy mobile,...
- Play videos, avi, mp4, music mp3, etc through these devices using Media Server of router. VLC is my preferred player.
- Additionally, copying the same files to a USB memory stick, I can play them on TV. That was the usual way so far.
- Activate DLNA on TV and see the files on the hard disk via wifi

But...

- I can?t play the files on the TV. Nor avi o mp4, mp3, jpg,..... Allways "File format not accepted"
- A strange thing : on DLNA the files are listed by name, but extension not appears nor "." Only the name. On the USB memory stick they appears complete.

My first impression was maybe the path to files were too long and I placed them on the root of disk. Same failure.
After this I cut the names : canon.mp3, mirlo.avi and so. Same failure.

Then :
-the WIFI is working well (I see the files)
-the DLNA is working well (I play the files over other devices)

Is it normal to hide extensions on DLNA?
Maybe the firmware version is too old (2010/05/11_001014)? Should I change it?

Thank you for your comments

yes, this is normal for some dlna servers.

if you start medis play on your tv and select to play videos it may occur that the dlna server still shows you mp3 or jpeg files but you tv wont open them as it still expects video files.

and it is normal that tv cannot play some filetypes, to fix this i use mediatomb as dlna server, this one can use VLC player to transcode other video files to TV compatible format just in time you choose to play it
//UE40C6500 @ T-VALDEUC 3011 // rooted manual HotelMode style // PVR to NFS via 18MB on-the-fly sparse XFS // >> decommissioned due to tuner death
//UE46F8090 @ T-FXPDEUC 1136 // rooted by new Widget // root starting with empty usb drive
FYI: you can close your ssh session with SamyGO with

Code: Select all

~.
If you can't fix it using dvct tape, you are not using enough dvct tape.

Thanks a lot beatfreak!

May be is a better idea to search a compatible DLNA. The star TV user, my wife, could flash to me if the TV bricks

DD-WRT seems like a good option.

P.S.: my goal is to have a router with LDNA and p2p applications. I need to turn off the PC
