I guess it's handled via software. Unfortunately Samsung doesn't care their customers and we don't know which registers control this...

I wish he could make something. but i think this is little not related with "communication stack"...
Also Samsung guys are not wanted to do their jobs.
They even cannot put old firmware to online for months...They don't answer my 3D defect mail for 2 weeks also.
Don't wait any help from them. They don't care any customer...

If your headphones got own volume control you can use Cinch audio output. You need cable with 2xCinch (male) and Mini Jack (female). Like this:

Then you can use menu what Jimmbean mention. But there is small problem when you choose:
  • TV speakers - sound from TV and headphones (you must decrease volume at headphones when you would like listen only TV speakers or unplug headphones)
  • external speakers - audio only at headphones
Using this you can notice small audio delay at headphones.

I know also solution with Scart (Euro output). You need also something like this:
