Is it possible to install the modified firmware meant for Series 5 or D5500 on Samsung D550 (LA40D550)?

1. Is there any generic failsafe way to try installing a new application or changing the firmware without bricking the LA40D550?

2. Is it possible to (temporarily) boot any simple Linux like OS from the USB of LA40D550?

Just show me some links to start with the experiment (just by taking little bit of risk)

Actually i have clear answer to both your questions: not possible.
Because this TV isn`t rooted, we don`t have way to run arbitrary code on it. Here are some models with T-MSV4DEUC (DAAC?) where you can get root over ExLink cable. But of your TV is based on T-MST4* firmware, then apologize, none has got root access.

It seems that samsung is providing source code for their firmware.
I can find only one such thing under this link.

Is there any possibility to compile our own firmware from this source? (I mean, if we get a suitable source code for LA40D550)

You don`t need "close match", you need "exact mach".
What is firmware on board? Name and version please.

I will tell you the exact model of my tv by tomorrow.
Mean time I contacted Samsung for the source code for LA40D55 and immediately got reply from them.

For all the following model, "11_LExxD4x0.zip" seems to be the source code archive of version 1000.

I downloaded the file "11_LExxD4x0.zip" and explored it.
The file "HOW_TO_BUILD_MSTAR_X6.txt" states the following :

This product has an MIPS processor;
the software is normally cross-compiled for that processor.
All of those softwares have to be built with the MontaVista
Mips toolchain gcc version 4.3.3 (VDLinux 1.1.x MIPS 2010-02-13)

Just have a look at that site and tell your opinion - whether, we can recompile the code for adding additional application on the TV.

Well, Samsung does NOT provide exact code. Means you cannot have an information to build the same binary on your TV for make your TV running.
It's samsungs politics. They just want look like giving sources that's all. If you inspect the sources, the most important parts like device drivers or parts like exeDSP binary is not included!
They are just closed sourced Samsung program.
Without those sources you cannot change anything with playing sources.
Even if you are able to compile all provided sources and could install them to TV (TV doesn't let this also), your TV will become $40 ARM pc, without GPU drivers and screen!
