2010 "C" models, open sources released by Samsung

Post by sbav1 »

Samsung kindly provided sources for their new DTVs:
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/conte ... Source.rar
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/conte ... Notice.txt

Interesting reading .

Three different kinds of hardware seem to be supported by this release:
1) "Aquila" : Samsung DTV Project - SDP92/Valencia, ARM Cortex-A8
2) "Corona": Samsung BD Project - SDP93/Barcelona, ARM Cortex-A8
3) "Leonid": Samsung DTV Project - SDP83/Chelsea, ARM1176JZF-S

I'm not 100% sure if SDP83/Chelsea parts of the code are in fully working order. If this good old chipset is actually still being utilized in some 2010 TV models, it may be the good news. This sugests newly added DTS decoding may be actually done in software (or, rather, in the microcode form, just like AC3/AAC/WMA formats are handled in B650's audio engine).

Kernel 2.6.24 - heavily patched, modified and tamper-proofed. Some config params look a little unusual..
Loopback is enabled, plus the XFS filesystem - I guess some kind of encrypted resources are being expected.
I suppose this shiny new toys may be really hard to get into :)

Updated RFS code is missing from the release, as are the drivers for Samsung's own wireless LinkStick devices (unless I'm very much mistaken).

sdp92 seem utilize a bit diffrent platform, it has sata and pcie interface. drivers for sata are not included.
There is also new ethernet driver, not sure if it's diffrent card, it 's realtek again, maybe it's on pcie interface now.
There are also two new drivers in kernel i2c and gpio for sdp83 and sdp9x
Diffrent debug is used: passcode '10041004' instead old 'debug'
still used authld stuff for CI+
More RAM on sdp92
UDF file system seems patches maybe for that BD, bluray player ? sata thing might be for that.
Anyway how you get that links ?
I tried on support download page there is no sources for them, also any firmware.
How you know, is new TV support DTS ?
sdp92 seems modified platform of sdp83 with some differences, like pcie, new ethernet card, new cpu, more ram. rest seems for now the same.

I wonder if new kernel would work on B650.

I sent email to vdswmanager@samsung.com, requesting sources (for LN40C650L1FXZA, to be exact) and they responded pretty fast, in about 2 bussiness days. Note, in the recently updated "guide", address for open source requests got changed to: oss.request@samsung.com.
I myself wonder why they decided to put some new additional sources (xfsprogs, iptables) to http://www.samsung.com/global/opensource, but not this one for some reasons :).

Actually I'm far from being sure about this, but according to specs on Sasmung website, virtually any of their 2010 TVs with USB movie playback (starting from C530 ?) supports DTS now.
The question remains - is SDP83 actually being used in any new Samsung 2010 models, or maybe the parts of the code for older platforms just got left over in this release.
I wonder if new kernel would work on B650.
I tried to build this kernel for SDP83 platform (with old arm_v6_vfp_le- toolchain) - so far with no luck; possibly it's the matter of choosing right combination of .config options.. For SDP92, on the other hand, they seem compilable just fine (there is an error on the very end of building process, I think it's related to missing initrd image file - not included in the release).

According to the PDF manual, the C series 7000 supports what is called "dts 2.0 digital output". This DTS standard can do stereo downmix and also pass through to 5.1 receiver. I've found information in this doc http://www.dts.com/DownloadDocument.asp ... 59b032722b
I'm not sure it can decode DTS-HD Master from a blue ray M2TS file. So far it smells very good.
