Samsung Email: Request to take down an article on your web

Post by erdem_ua »

This week I got an email from a samsung employee.
I can say this because email comes to my private e-mail from samsung.com domain.
Here it is:
Dear Mr. Erdem U. Altinyurt

This is H****** N** from Samsung. I'm in charge of technology planning of Blu-ray product.
We have found an article on your site in the URL below regarding CiNAViA.
http://wiki.samygo.tv/index.php5/ExeDSP_modifications
We examined this with Verance, and we strongly request you to take down above article.

The reasons are,
1. The article is including the modification and distribution of the proprietary code of Samsung without any permission.
2. And the Copyright License of Samsung's proprietary code is not granted to you for any modification, use, or distribution.
Thanks,

H****** N**

Samsung Electronics co., Ltd.

I looked over the page and search for the code but couldn't any of Samsung code at page. Could you?
Anyway my reply is:
Dear Mr.H******* N**,

Firstly about your attached picture message:
Be aware that, every e-mail communication at my e-mails could be published at SamyGO.tv or any other site and could distributed with anyone without requiring any permission/authorization of your side. Also my e-mail provider (Google) could scan my mails and they could process that information without any permission... Your side (you and your company) count as accepted and responsible that; I and SamyGO community has distribution right about every information that you shared with me. ( including the e-mail that I am replying now ). Simply "I DO NOT ACCEPT YOUR CLAIMS OVER LEAKING ANY INFORMATION AT YOUR EMAILS.". If you have any secret, confidential information etc... it is on your responsibility. Please do not tell us those secrets or we don't accept any blame/responsibility on this and it count as your own company fault...

The project e-mail address is samygo.project@g***mail.com .Please use it further communication and your reply...

About your request.
I look at the page. I don't prepared that page.
I search about "distribution of the proprietary code of Samsung" but I couldn't find it. I even look at history but can't locate "any" sources that belong to Samsung... Due this, I started thinking about you are tired at your work and misinterpret some codes with your company's own. Code looks like other codes most of the time and I understand about your misapprehend...

Also at SamyGO project, we observe law, more than Samsung co. Ltd... Your company do many GPL license violation at past (I believe they still) and doesn't release some critical/required codes that used on their products... Anyway.

If you have doubt on this issue and if you really want, I can show the page to lawyers for detailed examination If you accept to pay their invoices.
At the result of examination, If your claims are found as justified, than we will remove the guilty content (if there is any) and will apologize from Samsung.

Best Regards,

oho. Same style like they used to write. As always.
There is no Samsung code nor patched binaries and newer was. We can remove picture with example where functions of exedsp are mentioned. But that's all :-)

EDIT: Interesting what is their evidence for this assertion, that code below (example from wiki):

Code: Select all

08 40 2D E9 04 00 50 E3 00 F1 9F 97 ?? ?? 00 EA ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? 06 00 A0 E3
and

Code: Select all

08 40 2D E9 04 00 50 E3 00 00 A0 E1 ?? ?? 00 EA ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? 06 00 A0 E3
is proprietary of Samsung? :)

THAT is a perfect example of how Samsung manages to make themselves look like complete idiots! It can't possibly have been written by anyone with any education in law or copyrights. Probably written by some low-end technician or secretary, to show their boss that they "did something". It is just wrong. :D

Also, if we even tried to bother, we could surely point out a dozen places where Samsung either doesn't comply to GPL, or is using GPL'd code under wrong copyrights. Another thing is about the time-frame they use for their "open sourced" releases, where they post up sources that are several years older than the current releases actually used in our devices. Suck on that!

In addition, (listen up Samsung) any such request has to be made legal, by sending us a real paper copy that has been notarized. So unless we receive anything verifiable and meeting the legal standards from some top-ranking Samsung executive, I wouldn't give a rats ass.
